‘Bonfire Soup (How to write a poem)’
~
Berry says:
“Make a place to sit down
Sit down. Be quiet”
~
It might be like
Making soup
~
Gather your ingredients
Your implements, your tools
A pencil, a notebook
A chair and a table
~
Gather your thoughts
Your experience
Let them simmer a while
Stew. Infuse. Blend
~
Remember
and note
What others have said
“Heaven is here”
~
Cut it up
Add good oil
Heat it in the pan
Stir.
~
It doesn’t need
To be original
Your mother’s mother
Made good soup
~
A curled brown leaf
Woodsmoke in the valley
A stick man on the castle path
Tick of a bird repeating
~
December sun calling
For a pink peaked cap
A couple clearing the field
below. Maybe a bonfire
~
Your father’s father
made a good bonfire
With rake and barrow
And yesterday’s news
~
Light. Turn
Watch the edges
Pause a while
Draw on a good pipe
~
A curled brown leaf
Woodsmoke in the valley
~~~
Very much enjoyed this. Especially love the two grandparent lines. Echoes of Heaney's 'Digging', which is high praise indeed.
I really enjoyed this poem: fathers father, yesterday’s news, soup- ( ex-doesnt need to be original- mothers recipe) I like the nature paragraph too. i write poems very rarely though- there was one you brought to my mind-Thanksgiving Soup- one ingredient was a knitter in the car, (who was me). your bonfire soup brought back memories and also kept me with your moment. ❤️Keep writing & inspiring others.
